We love to sing and the world calls our singing, ehem, excellent, so it makes sense that for Independence Day, we make a playlist celebrating being Filipino. It’s pure coincidence that a lot of these songs make awesome karaoke numbers but we can’t help but wonder: Could it be because they are about being Filipino that make them perfect for singing along? In any case, here are our favorite 10! Mabuhay ang Pilipino!

Since we’re outraged by Dan Brown, the next logical step would have been to stop the Cannes screening of the remastered version of Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag.
Indeed: if Cannes is the center of world cinema, if we’re so goddamned sensitive about our image, then it makes no sense to allow the showing of a classic that exposes the city for what it really is: dirty and oppressive. A scathing social realist masterpiece, with Satan as production designer. But what truly disturbs is that from the time the movie was made and up to now, nothing much has changed. Except that everyone now has a cell phone.

Bella Flores is a Pinoy icon. There’s absolutely no doubt about that. For decades, she was one of the go-to villainnesses in Pinoy films. She wreaked her own special brand of onscreen havoc from the 1950s to 2011. She never seemed to grow old and looked like she could keep cackling her way to the next millenium. She always gave a go-for-broke performance in all of her villainous outings. We loved her for it and we also loved her because we knew she was nothing like the evil characters she played so well. Her family members, neighbors, and friends described her as a soft-spoken and friendly woman.
